“By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.” – Hebrews 11:31
Rahab is one of the most fascinating characters in the Bible. She is a Canaanite woman (think: Old Testament Gentile). Both of those things are chips off of any good Jew’s shoulder. Let’s not even mention her status as a prostitute 🙈. As a woman you held less dignity in others’ eyes, and being not of the Jewish line didn’t help much either. This woman would have been despised and hated in Jewish culture, yet God elevated her. Why?
She showed faithfulness.
This is a slap to the face to the Jewish people. Not only is God showing their lack of faithfulness, but He says that this woman who you systematically despise is more faithful than YOU!
Admirable Qualities of Rahab’s Faith:
- She stood fast for God and what she believed in, no matter what those around her thought or how she might be marginalized for it.
- She put herself at jeopardy for her faith in God.
Thinking about the world’s events, we need to be prepared to step out in a way that will marginalize us but in the end furthers and seeks the kingdom. What are you doing to do that now?
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” – Matthew 6:33
