“Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, and not frightened in anything by your opponents.” – Philippians 1:27-28a
Back in my 3 & 4 series, we explored what it looked like to be an outward display of our faith—that is, donning the “new self.” Here, Paul also talks about this idea, imploring his audience to live their loves in a matter of worthiness in Christ’s eyes so that they may be efficient lights for His ultimate purpose.
Paul doesn’t just want us to put on the new self on Sundays, but he wants us to live that way all the time, so that no matter when one looks, one would see one working hard to advance the Gospel.
>>Purpose Statement #7: We’re called to constantly advance the Gospel—sowing seed, bearing fruit, increasing in Christ—at all times.<<
Are you doing this now? What are some practical ways to continually keep on the new self? What are some goals you can set?
Read Colossians 1 for some additional support on the concept of bearing fruit and increasing the Gospel. It’s a very good complementary passage to this brief message. Take care, the next message is the last in the Purpose Statement series.
