Working for Joy

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” – Colossians 3:23-24

Serving earthly masters can be exhausting. Bowing to the restricting will of unjust parenting, authority figures, teachers who you don’t necessarily respect, trying to please everyone in your life, and many other things can wear and tear on our joy.

Colossians 3:23-24 states that working for the LORD will bring us a great reward. I’ll argue that that reward is two-fold: one being our treasures in heaven that await us, and the second being earthly joy bestowed upon us now (cf. Phil 4:4, Rom 15:13, Jas 1:2, Ps 16:11). If we’re constantly seeking the things above, and putting on the new self, if we do it for the LORD, we will receive His joy.

So what are we waiting for?
